Xalapa

Xalapa de Enriquez, commonly Xalapa or Jalapa is the capital city and second largest city of the Mexican state of Veracruz and the name of the surrounding municipality. In the year 2005 census the city reported a population of 387,879 and the municipality of which it serves as municipal seat reported a population of 413,136. The municipality has an area of 118.45 km2. Xalapa lies near the geographic center of the state and is the second-largest city in the state after the city of Veracruz.

Sitio web del gobierno municipal

Xalapa alcanzó fama como centro cultural desde mediados del siglo XIX: en 1843, con el nombre de Colegio Nacional de Xalapa se inauguró el que sería su Colegio Preparatorio y en diciembre de 1886, la Escuela Normal Veracruzana.

A principios del siglo XX, fue el epicentro del movimiento estridentista, en la década de los 70´s las actividades artísticas y académicas de la Universidad Veracruzana, la recolocaron a la vanguardia de las actividades artísticas y literarias del país.

Hoy, es sede de la Universidad Veracruzana, del prestigiado Instituto Veracruzano de la Cultura y cuenta con una de las mejores orquestas sinfónicas a nivel nacional.
